When Leopold II acceded to the Belgian throne on December 17, 1865, Belgium was about to enter the “Latin Union”. This European monetary union, which initially links Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy, provides for the standardization of the currencies of the Member States. It is based on characteristics of weight, size and title, specified by the “Latin Union” convention and which must be presented by the coins minted by the various States parties to this monetary system.
