20$ Double Eagle – Liberty Head
The American Eagle is the denomination of a base unit or standard, established for gold coins by the United States Mint.
This is why there is the unit Eagle, Double Eagle and Half Eagle.
The production of the Eagle ran from 1795 to 1933. Its titration changed during this period to reach 900 ‰ from 1837.
The obverse of these coins has logically changed during these years. Since 1839 we have found the head of the Statue of Liberty or “Liberty Head Design” which followed the “Indian Head” motif. Its creator is the engraver Christian Gobrecht.
The flip side has remained fairly similar throughout this time. It represents an eagle with outstretched wings, holding in its talons, an olive branch and three arrows. The eagle is protected by a shield.
